Create an account, click "Upgrade My Account", then select "I want a new number". Do not use your mobile number, the idea is to be able set this up w/o giving students your personal number. |

The next step is create a number. Simply put in your area code and if you choose your can search for available numbers. Jeremy suggested "212". Next, you will be provided with available numbers, simply select one. |

Next you select a PIN for the account. |

Next you select a forwarding number that will ring when the Google Voice number is called. I would suggest you department office phone. There are a lot of feature of Google Voice that can be used, I'm simply explaining the text feature. |

If all goes well, after a verification call to the number you gave in the above step, you should get the following message. Click finish. |

Now, you should be in the main "inbox" screen on your account. Click on the "gear" in the top right and then on "voice settings". |

Now simply select "Voicemail & Text" and check the text forwarding box. You are now ready to receive text messages to this new Google Voice number in your Gmail inbox. You can distribute this number to students and they can use to text in questions to your Gmail. One tip, the incoming text will be identified by the student's number, you may want to tell students to identify themselves in the text. |
