For the Birds is an animated short film, produced by Pixar and released in 2000. It won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film in 2001. The short film focuses on the difficulty that many living creatures experience in trying to 'fit in' with a group simply because they are 'different'.

Watch this short film and discuss the following questions in groups:

Why are the little birds arguing with each other?

How do they behave towards the new bird?

Why don't they want the new bird in their group?

Why does the new bird insist on trying to fit in?

How does their prejudice get them into trouble?

Who gets the last laugh?

Now consider these other issues regarding the topic:

Why are many people so quick to disassociate themselves from people who look 'different'?

Why do some people persist on trying to be a part of the 'cool' group even when they are not wanted?

Is it possible to change prejudice? How?

Does it take an embarrassing event, as in the short film, to change a person's opinion?

Is modelling empathetic behaviour an important feature of teacher training?

Should teachers be taught or trained in social emotional learning?
