Somerset County Freeholder Director Peter S. Palmer presented ceremonial checks to the county's 2017 Historic Preservation Grants at the freeholder board's Oct. 24 meeting. He was joined by county Historic Sites Coordinator Thomas D'Amico in presenting the $897,000 in grants to the following projects. The earliest part of the house was constructed in the Federal style by John Dunster, a Revolutionary War veteran, in 1805 with additions in 1852. Significant renovations in the Colonial Revival style were performed circa 1905. The 1905 renovations were constructed by Charles Fellows Squibb and designed by Frank Hutton of Hutton and Buys, New York. The property is proposed to be part of the proposed Somerset Hills in the Country Place Era, 1870-1940 multiple property National Register Nomination. Applicant: Friends of Historic Bernardsville Inc. Project: This application requests funds that will allow for significant completion of the exterior envelope of the main house. Removal of rotted shingle siding and the original clapboard siding will be repaired or replaced. Rotted trim and sill plates will be replaced and remaining windows and doors will be painted. In addition, grading, drainage, and remaining foundation issues will be addressed and a new 400-amp electrical service will be installed. Derrick Van Veghten House, Bridgewater Early to mid-18th century brick Dutch dwelling with an 1830 kitchen wing. This includes removing the greenhouse at the south end of the house, replacing the porch at the north end of the house, replacing the old asphalt shingle roofing with cedar shingles, repairing the windows and doors, and returning the exterior to the original paint colors that were found during the HSR process. Van der Veer-Harris House, Hillsborough This late-18th or early-19th century dwelling, with significant Colonial Revival renovations, was originally the home of Dr. Lawrence Van der Veer, a prominent local doctor. In 1940 Dr. Robert Harris incorporated Colonial Revival style into the homes renovation. The renovations were designed by Chester A. Paterson, a well-known advocate of the Colonial Revival style. Applicant: Township of Hillsborough Project: The grant includes rebuilding of existing concrete areaways; carpentry repairs and painting at the east elevation and east wing of the house; east wing roof replacement; carpentry repairs and painting at the north elevation; painting of the south elevation; painting of east elevation beyond carpentry repairs; and replacement of damaged gutter on the west wing. The former Rocky Hill School is a brick, two-story, four-classroom Colonial Revival school house built in 1908 and now used as the Borough Hall. It is considered a pivotal structure in the Rocky Hill Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Applicant: Borough of Rocky Hill Project: This project will return the interior first-floor and stairwell to their original configuration; repair and repaint wainscot in the hall and stair to appropriate colors; restore the tin ceiling; restore original wood flooring and remove vinyl flooring from stair treads; restore the steps; and restore interior window transom and paint. Doors will be restored to historically appropriate finish. Newer doors, electrical lighting and HVAC radiators units will be replaced with appropriate materials. Deteriorating VCT flooring and restore wood flooring and wainscot will be removed and replaced as needed. Mount Bethel Baptist Meeting House, Warren This meeting house was constructed in 1786, in part with materials salvaged from an earlier structure, by the county's first Baptist congregation. It is one of the few 18th-century timber-frame meeting houses in New Jersey that retains much of its original character Cheapest Marlboro Cigarettes. There were significant changes made to the structure in 1839 and 1887 as styles and customs of worship evolved. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
