Mohun Bagan Beat East Bengal 1-0

Kolkata, July 25 — In a spirited season opener packed with local pride, Mohun Bagan and East Bengal lined up with all-Indian starting elevens under new managerial leadership. Veteran defenders Anwar Ali (East Bengal) and Subhasish Bose (Mohun Bagan) led the backlines as the marquee derby kicked off the campaign in front of a raucous crowd.

Mohun Bagan took the initiative early, exploiting the right flank with pace from Tekcham Abhishek Singh. A first-half chance saw Abhishek whip in a curling cross toward the near post where Manvir Singh met it with a glancing header that skimmed the outside of the net. Moments later, another probing center found Kiyan Nassiri, but his header was calmly gathered by East Bengal goalkeeper Prabhsukhan Gill. Sahal Abdul Samad was central to the hosts’ creativity, testing the keeper twice—first needing a save, then watching a follow-up shot slide narrowly wide.

The tempo remained with Mohun Bagan for long stretches, though they failed to convert their superiority into a decisive goal. The Red and Gold Brigade stayed compact at the back, with Anwar Ali and Sandip Mandi organizing the defense as the teams went into the interval level at 0-0.

Seven minutes after the restart, the decisive moment arrived. Nassiri won a ball inside East Bengal’s box, dispossessing Rohit Danu, and cut a low cross across the six-yard box. Sahal Abdul Samad was waiting at the far post and simply steered the ball into an empty net to give Mohun Bagan the lead.

Responding to the deficit, East Bengal introduced fresh legs, with Mohamad Rashid and P.V. Vishnu joining the attack and Dejan Drazic entering the fray for the visitors. The changes paid immediate dividends as the visitors pressed forward in search of an equaliser. Vishnu unleashed a powerful strike from the left side that tested Vishal Kaith, who did well to make the stop.

The pattern flipped again in the later stages as East Bengal grew increasingly dangerous. Lalchungnunga burst through on the right and forced a sharp save from Kaith. He followed up the rebound, and Mohun Bagan were fortunate when Rashid’s volley failed to connect cleanly on the follow-up, letting the hosts survive the scare. The queue of chances continued with Jessin T.K. directing a header off target and Ramirez almost finding the mark with a near-post run that clipped the woodwork.

Kaith emerged as the match’s standout performer for Mohun Bagan, saving an acrobatic effort from Rashid after a well-timed cross from Ramirez. In the chain of corners that followed, Anwar Ali rose highest but could not keep his header on target, leaving Mohun Bagan clinging to their slender advantage as the final whistle approached.

As the clock wound down, East Bengal piled forward in waves, but Mohun Bagan’s compact backline and disciplined block-and-counter approach helped them protect the final one-goal margin. The full-time whistle confirmed a hard-earned 1-0 victory for the home side, who began the season with a win over their arch-rivals.

Both teams will now regroup ahead of the next fixture, but for Mohun Bagan, the derby result provided a positives: a win, a clean sheet, and a sign that their new-season plans are already taking shape. The win also set a strong tone for the campaign as fans looked on, hopeful for more moments like Sahal Samad’s decisive second-half goal.
