Deputy PM says Italy can no longer send aid to Ukraine

Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Matteo Salvini, says the country should stop providing financial support and weapons to Ukraine.

Salvini made the declaration during an extraordinary congress of his League party, where delegates overwhelmingly confirmed him as national secretary.

Addressing party members, he linked his leadership mandate to the League’s position on future military assistance. Salvini said he intends to argue at the next Council of Ministers meeting that Italy can no longer continue sending money and weapons to Ukraine.

The statement signals a renewed challenge to the Italian government’s existing policy, which has supported Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale invasion. Any change in that approach would require discussion within the governing coalition and could have wider implications for Italy’s role in European security policy.
