2026 🌋 Inside the Lost City of Pompeii: Immersive Experience Toronto | VR & 360° Show
Toronto is preparing to open a digital gateway to ancient Rome with Back to Pompeii: The Immersive Experience. Scheduled to arrive in North York in late 2026, the exhibition recreates the famous city as it appeared before Mount Vesuvius erupted in AD 79.
Rather than presenting history exclusively through traditional display cases, the experience combines reconstructed environments, interactive exhibits, panoramic projections and virtual reality. Visitors will be able to explore the routines, architecture and public spaces that once defined everyday life in Pompeii.
A Roman City Reconstructed
The journey leads guests through settings inspired by Pompeii’s streets and interiors. Bakeries, markets, taverns and schools help illustrate how residents worked, traded, learned and socialized nearly two millennia ago. Reproductions of household objects and commercial spaces provide additional context for life in one of the Roman Empire’s busiest cities.
These environments are designed to show that Pompeii was more than the site of a catastrophe. Before its destruction, it was a lively community filled with craftspeople, merchants, families and travelers. Its surviving ruins later became an extraordinary record of Roman urban life.
Mount Vesuvius in 360 Degrees
A major part of the exhibition is a 360-degree presentation that surrounds the audience with projected imagery. The show traces Pompeii’s story from its bustling daily activity to the devastating volcanic eruption that buried the city beneath ash and debris.
Large-scale visuals and environmental effects aim to create a sense of presence while explaining the sequence of events. The format offers an accessible way to encounter the disaster without reducing the city’s history to the eruption alone.
Walking Through Pompeii in VR
The exhibition’s Walking VR component adds another layer of immersion. Wearing a virtual-reality headset, participants can move through a digitally reconstructed version of the ancient city and examine locations from a first-person perspective.
For gaming and VR enthusiasts, this section may be the main attraction. Room-scale movement replaces passive observation, making the experience feel closer to environmental exploration than a conventional museum tour. It also demonstrates how interactive technology can help audiences understand archaeological sites whose original appearance has been altered by time.
History Meets Entertainment Technology
Back to Pompeii brings together archaeology, historical interpretation and location-based entertainment. The combination is intended to appeal to families, students, travelers, history fans and visitors curious about immersive media.
Its mix of physical scenery and digital storytelling should allow guests to experience the city from several perspectives: as a functioning Roman community, as the setting of a natural disaster and as an archaeological site that continues to shape modern understanding of antiquity.
