Mayo Club Championship roundup: Crossmolina light it up, Westport battle on, Davitts left devastated – GAA – Western People
A tense day of Mayo Club Championship action settled the remaining groups across senior and intermediate grades, bringing a flurry of goals, late twists and eye-catching performances. The results pave the way for the knockout stages and set up some mouth-watering ties in the weeks ahead.
In the top flight, Crossmolina produced a blistering opening to seal a big win in Group 1, trampling Ballyhaunis 5-17 to 1-14 as four goals arrived inside the opening ten minutes. The performance cemented their position at the head of the group and reinforced their status as a danger to any side come the knockouts. Ballina Stephenites joined them in the quarter-finals despite a quieter finish after the 37th minute, as they saw off Garrymore 0-16 to 0-13 to book their place.
Group 4 brought a dogged contest where Westport edged out Balla 0-15 to 0-11, a result that kept them well in the hunt as the group progressed. Meanwhile Knockmore claimed top spot by the slimmest of margins, cruising to a 3-19 to 1-12 victory over Mayo Gaels to seal the group crown on points difference.
In the Intermediate tier, Ardnaree Sarsfields earned a home quarter-final with a 1-17 to 1-10 victory over Castlebar Mitchels B, topping Group 1 in the process. Mitchels’ defeat meant Ballinrobe only needed a draw against Lahardane to advance, and they delivered, finishing 1-9 to 0-12, with Lahardane forced into relegation playoffs on head-to-head with Mitchels.
Group 2 action saw Kilmeena extend their perfect run to three wins from three by taking down Cill Chomáin 1-21 to 1-12. Cill Chomáin still progressed, while The Neale confirmed their intermediate status for next season with a 1-16 to 0-12 win over Burrishoole, who now face relegation playoffs.
The Group 3 finale kept supporters on the edge. Davitts defeated Kiltane 0-21 to 1-17 and appeared set for top spot, only for Parke Keelogues Crimlin to snatch a late score to draw Islandeady 1-12 apiece and advance on head-to-head with Davitts. Islandeady, meanwhile, drop into the relegation playoffs.
Junior action delivered its share of drama as Bonniconlon and Ardagh both won their matches—Bonniconlon overcoming Killala and Ardagh defeating Ballycroy—to secure their places in the quarter-finals ahead of their final group game against one another in two weeks. Killala finish bottom of Group 1 and will move to Junior B, while Ballycroy enter a decisive showdown with Ballycastle in two weeks to determine who progresses to the Junior A quarter-finals.
The day’s results leave several fixtures to look forward to, with the top qualifiers preparing for knockouts and the relegation battles heating up as teams jostle for survival.
The coming rounds promise to deliver more high-stakes clashes as teams chase title dreams and the chance to extend their runs in Mayo’s senior, intermediate and junior grades.
