Square Enix Cancels Development of Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link
The gaming community was taken by surprise as Square Enix announced the cancellation of Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link, a much-anticipated addition to the beloved franchise. The developers have decided to halt progress on the project, citing challenges in delivering a service that would remain enjoyable and fulfilling for players over a long duration.
This decision arrives amidst ongoing efforts dedicated to another key title in the series — Kingdom Hearts 4. The development team has reassured fans that they are fully engaged in bringing this installment to life and expressed hope for continued support from the gaming community despite the halt in Missing-Link‘s development.
Originally announced on April 10, 2022, during the Kingdom Hearts 20th Anniversary event, Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link was set to be a mobile action role-playing game. Post-announcement, several closed beta tests were conducted to refine the player experience, the final of which occurred from May 2, 2024, to May 10, 2024.
The project faced delays previously, with an announcement in November 2024 that postponed its release without a new timeframe. This update was followed by the recent decision to cease development entirely.
As attention shifts to Kingdom Hearts 4, it remains one of Square Enix’s significant upcoming releases within the franchise. Unveiled back in 2022, the game is being designed using the cutting-edge Unreal Engine 5. However, the developers have not yet provided a specific release date, leaving fans eagerly anticipating further updates.
With the cancellation of Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link, the developer’s focus is clearly set on ensuring that Kingdom Hearts 4 meets fans’ expectations, maintaining the magic that has kept the series popular for years.
