How to Use Minecraft Photon Shaders

Minecraft, beloved for its creativity and expansive gameplay, is often recognized by its basic graphics in the vanilla version. However, the Java Edition of the game opens up a world of possibilities with various mods that enhance and transform its visual elements. Among these, shader packs stand out, completely revamping lighting, shadows, fog, and reflections, ultimately redefining the blocky aesthetic of Minecraft. Photon shaders, in particular, offer stunningly realistic effects, with reflections, cloud textures, and lighting effects that bring the game to life. This article provides a step-by-step guide to installing and using Photon shaders in Minecraft.

Step 1: Setting Up Iris Shaders

To begin your journey towards enhanced visuals, you’ll need to set up the Iris Shaders. This mod facilitates the use of any shader pack in the game. Thanks to a collaboration between Iris and the Sodium Mod, both can be installed simultaneously via the Iris installer.

First, visit the official site to download the Iris Shaders Installer. Once on the page, simply click the “Download Now” button to obtain a setup file. After downloading, run the installer. This will automatically synchronize with the latest version of the game (currently 1.21.8) and locate the Minecraft game directory on your PC.

You have the option to install either Iris along with Sodium, or integrate both using the Fabric mod loader. For gamers intending to expand their mod collection in the future, selecting the “Iris + Fabric” installation is recommended. On the other hand, if your current needs are focused on shader support and a performance boost, installing Iris alone will suffice, as it will automatically include Sodium.

Step 2: Downloading the Photon Shader Pack

Once Iris shaders are ready, the next task is obtaining the Photon shader pack. Head to the Modrinth platform to find and download this shader pack. After hitting the download button, the Photon shader pack will be delivered in a neat zip file, which doesn’t require extracting. Your task is to copy this zip file directly into the official Minecraft directory.

Step 3: Installing and Activating Photon Shaders

With the Photon shader pack downloaded, it’s time to introduce it to your game. Launch the official Minecraft game launcher, choose Java Edition, and select the “Iris & Sodium” game version from the drop-down menu. Once set, launch the game.

In-game, navigate to the video settings, now appearing quite revamped thanks to the Sodium mod. Within these settings, locate the “Shader Pack” options and click on “Open Shader Pack Folder.” Minimize the game briefly to copy and paste the downloaded Photon shader pack into this folder.

Once this step is complete, maximize the game again. In the settings menu, select the newly added Photon shader pack and load it. With everything in place, you’re ready to immerse yourself in a transformed Minecraft world. Explore your environment and witness the game as you’ve never seen it before, with realistic lighting, shadows, and reflections enhancing every moment.

With these shaders applied, Minecraft resembles an entirely different game, all while retaining the charming blockiness we love. Dive into your favorite worlds and savor the enhanced visual experience. Now, get ready to explore your blocks in style!
