Postcard Mural Project Starts Up on YMCA Building
The long-awaited “postcard mural” has found its home on the south-facing wall of the YMCA building, bringing a new vibe to the town. Created initially two years ago, the Town of Colors committee finally secured this prominent location. This week marks the commencement of the artistic endeavor as artist Ken “Phybr” Dushane arrived to set the project into motion.
“It’s a super chill town,” shared Dushane, reflecting on the welcoming atmosphere he experienced upon his arrival. Over the past few days, Dushane has been busy navigating through the weather challenges and preparing the wall for the mural’s creation. Thanks to the unwavering support from the Town of Colors committee and Mayor Dean Andrews, necessary equipment and a warm reception were readily available to ensure everything unfolds smoothly.
“He’s been super helpful,” remarked Dushane regarding the mayor’s assistance, essential to kickstarting this colorful project.
The first steps of turning this vision into reality commenced on Thursday with Dushane beginning the tracing phase of the mural. Traditionally, such tasks are reserved for nighttime, utilizing a projector to cast the design onto the surface. However, embracing modern technology, Dushane opts for a VR headset that superimposes the image directly over the wall through an augmented reality display, allowing him to paint during daylight hours.
“Being able to work in the middle of the day rather than waiting for nightfall is incredibly convenient,” explained Dushane, highlighting the advantage of this innovative approach.
The mural is expected to take between 10 to 14 days to fully materialize. During this period, passersby are encouraged to witness the unfolding of this vibrant artwork, providing an opportunity to engage with the creative process firsthand.
To celebrate the commencement of this significant cultural addition, the local Charles City Arts Center is hosting a welcome reception for Dushane. Community members can formally greet the artist on Friday, July 11, at 5 p.m., fostering a connection between the creator and the community that his artwork will enrich.
