With Kentucky mobile ID, Idemia adds 19th state to list of mDL activations | Biometric Update
Built through a collaboration with Idemia Public Security, the program lets residents verify their identity and age by presenting a digital credential stored on a smartphone. Access is secured via biometric authentication or a personal identification number, giving users control over what information is shared during verification.
Officials indicate the digital ID can be used at TSA security lines and by participating venues across the country, including screenings at major Kentucky airports and others such as CVG, SDF, LEX, and PAH.
The digital ID is described as a complement to a physical card, with privacy in mind. Data-minimization features allow users to prove specific attributes (for example, age) without exposing broader personal data like a home address during a transaction.
To support adoption by merchants and other verification partners, Kentucky is offering a free Mobile ID Verify App. The companion tool enables verifiers to initiate checks and confirm identity or age while limiting data access to only what is necessary. The app relies on Bluetooth with end-to-end encryption, and verifiers can choose which data fields to access.
Efforts from the Idemia side emphasize the ongoing move toward secure, convenient digital IDs and the continued collaboration with the Kentucky DMV to deliver a robust mobile identity solution to residents.
For now, the DMV app serves as the primary delivery channel, with plans to integrate major digital wallets from device platforms in the future. Importantly, the digital ID is not a substitute for carrying a physical credential; residents should still have a tangible ID available when needed.
