The Many Faces of Creative AI in Musical Composition and Performance
Music and artificial intelligence have been trading ideas for decades, but the pace and scale of change in the last few years have redrawn the creative map. For musicians, composers, and producers, AI is both a catalyst for new sonic possibilities and a stress test for an already fragile creative economy. The core question now is not whether AI can make music—but how we want it to, and under what terms.
From Early Experiments to the LLM Era
Long before today’s headline-grabbing models, composers experimented with rule-based systems, Markov chains, genetic algorithms, and interactive software to spark ideas and structure sound. Those tools were often transparent, hands-on, and designed to augment human imagination.
The arrival of large language models (LLMs) and diffusion-based audio systems shifted expectations. Models trained on vast datasets can now emulate styles, orchestrate, and generate stems or full tracks at speed. That power has unearthed a tangle of legal, ethical, and cultural questions—about consent, credit, compensation, and the risk of flooding markets with frictionless replicas of existing work.
What This Seminar Covers
This seminar takes stock of the field: it looks back at the fruitful pre-LLM lineage of machine creativity, surveys the current landscape, and explores where human–computer collaboration might go next—on stage, in the studio, and in the software stack. It frames creative AI not as a single technology, but as a family of approaches with distinct architectures, ethics, and sonic outcomes.
Disentangling “Creative AI”
Not all AI systems serve the same purpose. Drawing on recent research and composition practice by Robert, the seminar separates tools that artists find genuinely generative from those designed to automate or displace labor:
- Augmentative tools: systems that suggest harmonies, textures, or rhythmic motifs; adaptive effects that respond to performance; intelligent editors that speed up arrangement and mixing while keeping the artist in control.
- Generative collaborators: models that co-compose via prompts or gestures, learn from a composer’s own catalog, and iterate in dialogue with the creator rather than a web-scale corpus.
- Real-time performance systems: AI setups that listen and respond on stage—improvising, live-sampling, and transforming sound with musicians in the loop.
- Automation and replication engines: tools aimed at cloning styles, timbres, or voices at scale, often without consent or compensation—useful for prototyping, but ethically fraught and economically destabilizing when used to replace paid creative work.
By distinguishing these categories, the seminar asks a practical question: which systems actually expand the palette of expression, and which primarily optimize for volume and interchangeability?
Practice-Led Insights and Demos
Through audio-visual case studies, attendees will see how different model choices shape musical results. Examples include:
- Human-in-the-loop composition, where a composer guides an AI through iterative prompts, constraints, and feedback, creating pieces that neither could make alone.
- Dataset curation strategies that favor consented, high-quality material aligned with a project’s goals, reducing ethical risk while improving sonic coherence.
- Live rigs that pair inference engines with controllers, sensors, and DAWs, enabling improvisation with AI as a responsive instrument rather than a black-box generator.
These demos underscore a key principle: creative outcomes are inseparable from design choices. Training data provenance, model transparency, latency budgets, and interface design all influence the resulting sound—and the fairness of the workflow behind it.
Why Creative Practice Must Shape the Tech
When artists help design, test, and critique AI tools, the results are more musically interesting and more ethically robust. The seminar highlights practical guardrails that support both innovation and sustainability:
- Consent and provenance: use data with clear permission, document sources, and make attribution visible.
- Compensation models: build licensing and revenue-sharing into platforms, especially when models learn from identifiable styles or voices.
- Transparency: disclose when AI is used, what models are involved, and where generative elements appear in a track.
- Control surfaces and UX: expose parameters that matter musically—timbral evolution, structural variance, rhythmic density—so artists can play the system, not just trigger it.
The upshot is simple: creative practice isn’t a downstream application of AI. It’s a design discipline that determines what these systems become and how they’re used.
