‘Atikokan gets ‘a chance to breathe a little bit’ as manhunt ends: Mayor’
Relief arrived in Atikokan hours after authorities confirmed two armed suspects were found and the immediate danger had subsided. The town’s leadership had been briefed that the incident might be wrapped up by morning and that the shelter-in-place order could be lifted.
Officials announced the advisory ended around 2:15 a.m. on Friday as investigators confirmed the suspects were located and there was no ongoing threat to residents. The community had spent roughly a day and a half indoors as police conducted a wide-ranging search.
“There’s a sense of relief, but there are still many questions to be addressed,” said Rob Ferguson, the town’s mayor. “Our hearts go out to the family affected by this tragedy.” The individual who died was connected to Atikokan, adding an extra layer of grief for many residents as they begin to heal and return to normal routines.
Earlier in the evening, police responded to reports of gunfire in the Don Park area, prompting the shelter-in-place order for the town while officers hunted the suspects described as armed and dangerous. The community effectively paused for a full day, with schools, businesses, and municipal services closed as a precaution.
Early Friday, authorities released a brief update stating that both suspects had been located and that the public safety threat was no longer active. While there was no immediate mention of charges, investigators indicated the inquiry would continue and a strong police presence could remain as the on-site work continued.
As life in Atikokan gradually returned to normal, Ferguson praised residents for their cooperation and adherence to safety guidance. “People respected the process and supported one another during this difficult time,” he said, noting that the community’s calm demeanor helped the resolution unfold.
Officials with the Ontario Provincial Police emphasized how seriously safety was taken and thanked the community for staying informed and safe. They underscored that the response was guided by a focus on protecting residents and maintaining public trust throughout the investigation.
