MetaOptics Ships Automatic Metalens Tester to Taiwanese Partner Pin-Jye Nano Technologies
MetaOptics has delivered its Automatic Metalens Tester to Pin-Jye Nano Technologies in Taoyuan, Taiwan, bolstering the island’s end-to-end metalens manufacturing framework. Located near Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, the site is positioned to serve both local and international customers, tightening turnaround times for sectors racing toward smaller, lighter, and more efficient optics—particularly AR/VR, mobile imaging, automotive sensing, and data-center optics.
Why this matters for AR/VR and beyond
Metalenses are key to shrinking optical stacks without sacrificing performance, a critical need for next-generation XR headsets and advanced mobile cameras. Moving from lab-scale prototypes to reliable, high-volume production demands precise, automated testing to ensure every die meets stringent optical specifications. By anchoring advanced testing in Taiwan, MetaOptics and Pin-Jye bring mass-production credibility closer to the heart of Asia’s semiconductor ecosystem.
A full toolchain comes online in Taiwan
The new Automatic Metalens Tester completes a production pairing with MetaOptics’ Direct Laser Writer (DLW), which was installed at Pin-Jye in September 2025. With both systems in place, Pin-Jye can not only fabricate metalenses but also perform comprehensive, automated sorting and characterization—supporting 100% testing coverage across dies. Metalens design work continues to be centralized at MetaOptics’ Singapore Excellence Center, ensuring a steady pipeline of designs optimized for scalable manufacturing.
What the Automatic Metalens Tester does
- Built for 12-inch glass-based metalens wafers, aligning with MetaOptics’ high-volume production format.
- Operates across visible and near-infrared bands using dedicated laser sources, critical for applications spanning color imaging and depth/IR sensing.
- Automates key measurements, including wavelength- and polarization-dependent optical efficiency and focus quality.
- Supports an expansive field-of-view of approximately 360 by 120 degrees and accommodates working distances from just a few centimeters to optical infinity.
- Integrates pick-and-place handling for diced 12-inch wafers, enabling precise die management, performance-based binning, and sorting into JEDEC trays for pass/fail categorization.
This combination improves throughput, consistency, and traceability—exactly what OEMs and Tier 1s expect when scaling products in co-packaged optics (CPO), mobile imaging, AR headsets, automotive driver monitoring and lidar, and other fast-growing markets.
Executive perspective and ecosystem ambitions
According to Executive Chairman Thng Chong Kim, deploying both prototyping and automated testing under one roof in Taiwan tightens the feedback loop between design, fabrication, and quality control. The result: quicker iterations, stronger quality assurance, and a clearer bridge from early samples to volume shipments for partners across the semiconductor supply chain. MetaOptics also notes an ongoing collaboration with a prominent European foundry to bring the Automatic Metalens Tester into their factory, underscoring the system’s role as a foundational element for global scale-up.
Factory-ready optics for next-gen devices
As XR hardware makers target lighter headsets with wider fields of view and improved clarity, metalenses promise flatter optics with fine-grained control over phase and polarization—particularly valuable in compact AR displays and NIR-based sensing for hand and eye tracking. Reliable, automated test infrastructure reduces variability, accelerates qualification, and provides the traceability demanded by top-tier consumer electronics, automotive, and data-center players. For gaming and VR, that translates to crisper visuals, lower weight, and better comfort—essentials for longer sessions and broader adoption.
Beyond testing: assembling complete modules
MetaOptics’ manufacturing playbook extends past lithography and testing. The company also offers an automatic metalens optical module assembler designed for both color and monochrome camera modules. With DLW, the Automatic Metalens Tester, and module assembly solutions, the toolkit supports the full journey from design to qualified sub-assemblies—streamlining supply chains and simplifying vendor management for device makers.
Business structure and global rollout
To support scaling demand, MetaOptics is evaluating further deployments of its Direct Laser Writers and Automatic Metalens Testers in additional markets. These systems sit within a broader organizational framework spanning four integrated business units: capital equipment, metalens design and foundry services, IoT and smart devices, and AI-driven algorithms. The combination allows MetaOptics to co-develop optical hardware and computational imaging, an increasingly important pairing as camera modules shrink and software assumes more of the image-quality burden.
