Bitmap Books To Launch ‘Fatal Fury: The Ultimate History’
Bitmap Books is set to celebrate one of arcade gaming’s cornerstone brawlers with the release of Fatal Fury/Garou Densetsu: The Ultimate History on May 20, 2026. This expansive volume revisits SNK’s iconic fighting saga—known as Garou Densetsu in Japan—which helped shape the genre in the early ’90s and elevated the NEOGEO’s reputation as a high-end home platform.
Crafted as a definitive companion for fans and newcomers alike, the book spans 460 pages printed with Pantone inks on premium stock, emphasizing both archival accuracy and visual punch. Its pages draw from privileged access to SNK’s internal materials, presenting rarely seen concept sketches, promotional artwork, and cover designs that trace how Terry Bogard, Geese Howard, Rock Howard, and the rest of the cast evolved over time.
Rather than offering a simple chronological recap, the text digs into the creative thinking behind each era of the series. It explores how the team iterated on mechanics and character identity across entries—from the experimental branch represented by Fatal Fury: Wild Ambition to the fan-favorite refinement of Garou: Mark of the Wolves—and connects those foundations to the forthcoming Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves.
Firsthand insights play a central role. Interviews with key contributors—including pixel artists Hitoshi Okamoto, Youichiro Soeda, and Nobuyuki Kuroki, as well as planner Takeshi Kimura—shed light on sprite craftsmanship, frame readability, and the balancing acts that define high-level competitive play. The project also features a foreword by SNK Fighting Games Chief Producer Yasuyuki Oda, framing the series’ legacy from within the studio’s modern leadership.
Visually, the book doubles as an art showcase. It features crisp sprite sheets, in-game captures, and striking illustrations by renowned creators such as Shinkiro, TONKO, and Eiji Shiroi. Beyond celebrating Fatal Fury’s own timeline, the volume also maps how its characters and concepts ripple through the broader SNK tapestry, touching on ties to The King of Fighters and Art of Fighting.
