How to view Thursday night’s partial lunar eclipse
On Thursday evening, observers across much of the Midwest can look up to a rare celestial show as a large portion of the Moon passes into Earth’s shadow. While technically a partial phase, the shadow covers a substantial fraction of the lunar disk, creating a striking sight for skywatchers near Omaha and beyond.
During a lunar eclipse, the Sun’s illumination is blocked by Earth, and the planet’s shadow sweeps across the Moon’s surface. The deeper the Moon travels into the darkest part of that shadow—the umbra—the more dramatic the dimming becomes. This event will push the Moon toward near-total coverage, clocking in around the high end of partial eclipses.
As darkness advances, a coppery-red tint often emerges. The color comes from sunlight filtered through Earth’s atmosphere: blue and violet wavelengths are scattered away, while red light can still bend toward the Moon, tinting it as the eclipse progresses.
You don’t need any fancy gear to enjoy it. The Moon should be visible to the naked eye, and a modest pair of binoculars or a small telescope will reveal more subtle shading and color shifts. For best luck, find a spot with a clear view to the eastern sky and away from bright artificial lights.
The partial phase begins in the evening, with the event peaking later in the night. Even if you only have a few minutes, stepping outside during the late-night window should let you catch the Moon near its deepest shading.
Extra tips: Check a reliable local forecast for clear skies, give yourself time to settle into darkness, and bring a warm layer since temperatures often drop after sunset. The viewing window lasts as long as the Moon remains visible and the atmospheric conditions cooperate, typically about an hour or so of noticeable shading.
