Cronkite Outstanding Innovator’s Message for Future Students: Face New Beginnings with Confidence

Manisha Rajnish once envisioned a future in business while in India. Her journey took an unexpected turn when she transitioned to Arizona State University (ASU) and discovered a fiery passion for journalism. Bringing along her entrepreneurial spirit, Rajnish is now celebrating her graduation with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and mass communication, all the while developing a groundbreaking virtual reality tool designed to assist journalists in managing high-pressure situations.

This innovation, named NewsPro VR, germinated in a class focused on the intersection of business and journalism at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. With support and development guidance from Cronkite’s New Media Innovation and Entrepreneurship Lab, the project has grown significantly. It is now in the queue for potential funding from Venture Devils, a milestone reflecting its promise.

Rajnish is being recognized for her contributions with the Top Innovator Award at the upcoming spring 2025 convocation for the Cronkite School. Her journey from an international transfer student to an acclaimed innovator provides valuable insights and encouragement for others following a similar path.

Choosing the Cronkite School

The decision to study in the U.S. stemmed from a drive to receive top-notch education in journalism. A thorough examination of potential schools highlighted the Cronkite School as one of the most exceptional choices, which ultimately solidified Rajnish’s decision. The supportiveness of faculty members, which included aiding her development of a virtual environment training tool for journalists, exceeded her expectations.

Surprising Discoveries at ASU

Rajnish was pleasantly surprised by the proactive involvement of professors who valued and supported student initiatives. Her creation of a high-pressure training tool for journalism contexts, like school shootings, benefitted significantly from this encouragement. This discovery dispelled her preconceived notion of a passive educational experience, positioning the university as an active partner in fostering innovation.

Building Connections and Community

Adjusting to a new environment can be daunting, yet Rajnish felt a sense of belonging almost immediately. The camaraderie and support within the campus eased her transition, preventing the homesickness many international students might feel. The vast number of Indian students and vibrant student organizations fostered a comforting familiarity and sense of community, crucial for those far from home.

Guidance for Future Students

Rajnish’s experiences have led her to advise future students not to dread starting anew. Breaking free from the notion that initial choices must dictate one’s path indefinitely, she has continually sought what truly aligns with her aspirations. Her journey, shifting from engineering or medical school, then business, and eventually settling on journalism, exemplifies the rich discoveries possible when one is unafraid to change direction.

Future Aspirations

With graduation on the horizon, Rajnish remains open to multiple avenues. She’s considering a master’s program in Narrative and Emerging Media to expand on her current project. Additionally, an internship at NEWSWELL has opened further opportunities, should it evolve into full-time employment. Her future remains a canvas rich with potential paths, each holding unique promise.

The Lure of Innovation in Journalism

The ever-evolving landscape of media and journalism captivates Rajnish. She is inspired by its dynamic nature and the continuous potential to innovate, channeling creativity to impact stories and foster human connections. This field goes beyond factual broadcasts; it’s about connecting individuals through storytelling, and Rajnish is excited about the roles technology and innovation play in this narrative future.
