New York Jets Can’t Look Past the Miami Dolphins

The New York Jets have learned the hard way that an opponent’s record means very little once the game begins. With the winless Miami Dolphins coming to town Sunday, New York faces the kind of matchup that can become dangerous if confidence turns into complacency.

On paper, the Jets appear to have the stronger team. Miami has struggled throughout the season, while New York remains in contention and has far more at stake. Still, the NFL has produced countless reminders that no team is guaranteed an easy afternoon.

The Jets have experienced those lessons repeatedly. In 1991, they hosted the Indianapolis Colts, who entered the game without a victory. New York had already beaten Indianapolis earlier that season and jumped out to a 14-0 advantage in the rematch. The Colts responded behind three touchdown passes from Jeff George and an 88-yard kickoff return by Clarence Verdin, stunning the Jets 28-27.

Indianapolis finished that season 1-15. Its only victory came against a Jets team that eventually reached the playoffs.

New York suffered another painful defeat in 1995 against the expansion Carolina Panthers. Carolina had yet to win an NFL game when the Jets visited Clemson. New York held the lead before a Bubby Brister shovel pass was intercepted by linebacker Sam Mills and returned for a touchdown. The Panthers seized control and secured their first regular-season victory, 26-15.

Perhaps the most frustrating example came in 2008. The Jets were 9-5 and fighting for a postseason spot when they traveled to face a Seattle team with only three wins. New York managed just three points in a 13-3 loss, with Brett Favre throwing two interceptions and the offense disappearing after the opening quarter.

Ten years later, the Jets helped the Cleveland Browns end one of the longest winless stretches in league history. Cleveland had not won since December 2016 and entered the 2018 matchup at 0-1-1. New York raced to a 14-0 lead, but everything changed when rookie Baker Mayfield entered after Tyrod Taylor was injured. Mayfield sparked the Browns, who rallied for a 21-17 victory.

Those results do not necessarily prove that the Jets overlooked their opponents. Football games can turn on turnovers, special teams plays, injuries and a handful of missed opportunities. But the pattern remains clear: failing to respect a struggling team can transform a favorable matchup into a season-altering setback.

Miami may be at the bottom of the standings, yet the Dolphins still possess enough speed, athleticism and competitive pride to create problems. If the Jets start slowly or assume the game will take care of itself, they could give Miami the opening it needs.

New York must treat Sunday as a serious test from the first snap. A focused performance would keep the Jets moving toward their goals. A careless one could add another upset to a long list of games they would rather forget.
