Montgomery has career-high 4 RBIs in 9-1 win, White Sox extend A’s losing streak to 9
A rapid start propelled Chicago to a 9-1 victory, widening Oakland’s skid and placing the White Sox atop the division as the All-Star break nears. Sam Antonacci and Braden Montgomery each belted a homer in a six-run first inning to seize command early.
Montgomery delivered a career-best four RBIs, his highest total in a big-league game. He came into the day with eight RBIs across his first 28 appearances and added to that total with a crucial three-run homer as part of the opening rally, plus an RBI single later in the game.
Chicago completed the three-game sweep, outscoring the A’s 24-2 in the series after a rough outing against Boston. The win left the White Sox a narrow margin ahead in the AL Central as Oakland’s struggles continued, dropping to 41-55 on the season.
Oakland briefly grabbed a lead in the first when Shea Langeliers belted his 21st homer, but Antonacci answered right away with a homer off J.T. Ginn on the third pitch of the frame. Kyle Teel then delivered a two-run single, and Montgomery capped the rally with a three-run blast to make it 6-1.
Montgomery added an RBI single in the fifth, padding the advantage.
Schultz earned the win, his first in seven starts, permitting one run and four hits over five innings. He had struggled in his recent outings, allowing 16 runs across 18 2/3 innings in his prior four appearances. Ginn took the loss after being touched for eight runs in 4 1/3 innings.
Up next: Oakland hosts Washington for a three-game set beginning Friday, while Chicago heads to Toronto to begin the second half against the AL-champion Blue Jays.
