Trump Threatens Higher Costs if South Korea Skips Alaska LNG Investment

A high-stakes dispute over the Alaska LNG project intensified after President Donald Trump suggested that Seoul must join the roughly $50 billion venture or face steeper charges. Speaking with reporters at the White House, he claimed that he did not intend to rush the announcement but warned that non-participation could come with financial penalties.

Asked whether Seoul had committed to contributing, the president indicated that a deal was not settled and implied that South Korea could face increased costs if an agreement was not reached promptly. He added that if talks stall, the terms could be adjusted upward, signaling pressure on an ally to align with Washington’s position on the investment.

On the preceding day, Trump had publicly asserted that South Korea would invest in the Alaska LNG project. In response, a spokesperson from Seoul stated that the plan was under review, with decisions pending a thorough assessment of commercial viability and compliance with domestic laws; no final decision on investment quantity or scope had been made.

Analysts cautioned that the exchange highlights the ongoing complexity of financing and approving a large-scale energy export facility, involving government stakeholders, private firms, and regulatory checks. The remarks risk creating uncertainty around timelines and commitments among partners who had been weighing their participation.

From Washington’s perspective, the emphasis appears to be on securing ally participation in a capital-intensive energy project tied to Alaska’s resources. For Seoul, the stance remains cautious: any commitment would follow detailed due diligence covering economic benefits, risk exposure, and long-term strategic alignment rather than a hurried pledge.

Looking ahead, observers say the eventual outcome will depend on whether the Alaska LNG proposal can demonstrate solid viability and whether terms can be aligned to satisfy all parties involved. Until a formal decision is announced, the plan remains under consideration with no binding commitments in place.
