US lambastes UN for failing to play ‘constructive role’ in ending Ukraine war
A senior U.S. official delivered a pointed rebuke to the United Nations, saying the world body has not managed to help end the Ukraine conflict and risks becoming irrelevant if it cannot assist in brokering peace.
Arguing the UN’s founding purpose after World War II was to stop future wars, the official said the Security Council has too often been trapped in procedural debates rather than moving toward a concrete peace agreement. The Ukrainian crisis has stretched on longer than the United States’ own involvement in World War II, he noted, underscoring the urgency of action.
Washington said it remains deeply involved in diplomacy, with discussions among the parties continuing and recent talks held as recently as the past weekend.
He challenged fellow council members on the value of their public statements, asking whether their remarks are likely to advance a peaceful resolution or simply amount to rhetoric without tangible results.
The official warned that the UN’s current approach risks undermining its core mission and urged immediate efforts to shape a credible path to peace, rather than letting debates drift indefinitely.
“There is no greater honor than being a peacemaker,” he remarked, calling on the organization to seize this moment to demonstrate its relevance and contribute meaningfully to ending the war.
