Connected Vehicles Are Leaping Into The Driver’s Lane, And Iteris’ Software And Hardware Stack Is Playing A Role

The notion of vehicles communicating with each other and with roadside infrastructure is swiftly transitioning from a futuristic concept to a tangible reality. As cities, municipalities, and government agencies globally strive to enhance road safety and tackle traffic congestion, the deployment of connected vehicle (CV) technology is gaining momentum.

With the capability of CV technology to facilitate vehicle communication regarding driving conditions, traffic flow, and accidents in real-time, it has become an invaluable resource for agencies managing the world’s roadways. The market is projected to skyrocket, reaching an estimated $446.6 billion by 2033, boasting a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 19.5% over the next decade. Contrast this with the market’s 2023 valuation of $75.2 billion, highlighting the increasing demand for CV technology.

Iteris: A Pioneer in Connected Vehicle Technology

At the forefront of this technological evolution is Iteris Inc., a global player in the realms of connected vehicle (CV) and connected vehicle-to-everything (V2X) technology. Iteris is instrumental in shaping this transformation, supplying AI-driven sensors, cameras, and software designed to optimize intersections and roadways worldwide.

An insightful example is Iteris’ V2X Connect software application. V2X Connect verifies that connected vehicle devices transmit and receive secure, reliable messages while in the field. This application recently earned certification from the OmniAir Consortium, the eminent industry association advocating for interoperability in Intelligent Transportation Systems, tolling, and connected vehicles.

Iteris’ receipt of this certification underscores V2X Connect’s capacity to effectively capture and analyze over-the-air (OTA) network traffic, offering both real-time and offline analysis via its mobile application. This initiative bolsters traffic management agencies and system integrators in deploying connected vehicle applications efficiently.

Transportation personnel, system integrators, Iteris distributors, and general contractors frequently utilize this advanced diagnostic tool, including the Florida Department of Transportation Traffic Engineering Research Laboratory and the USDOT Federal Highway Administration, to advance their connected vehicle endeavors.

“Iteris’ work on the V2X Connect test system sets a new benchmark in the industry,” remarks Jason Conley, executive director of OmniAir. “This test system can benefit test laboratories, infrastructure owners/operators, and the wider industry.”

Adopting a Hardware Agnostic, Interoperable Strategy

Complementing V2X Connect is Iteris’ VantageARGUS CV — previously known as BlueARGUS. This software suite empowers transportation professionals to exploit fully the potential of connected vehicle applications and travel-time data. The SaaS offering is hardware agnostic and interoperable, enabling a wide array of connected vehicle applications, including data collection and performance analytics related to travel time and speed.

While VantageARGUS CV primarily addresses congestion management, its utility extends to empowering agencies to deploy CV applications effectively. Its Origin-Destination (O-D) feature offers agencies a thorough analysis of traffic flow and driver behavior, detailing entire trip sequences and events to enhance traffic control, signal optimization, and congestion management across designated zones.

The software’s interactive dashboard provides users the capability to analyze metrics, monitor connected device status, and check travel time routes and speed patterns to optimize traffic flow. Additionally, it allows for the integration of statewide and city data, creating a comprehensive traffic management solution accessible to agencies with all essential traffic data at their disposal.

“As roads become busier, the quest for smoother traffic flows and enhanced safety intensifies,” Iteris explains. “VantageARGUS CV, previously known as BlueARGUS, not only answers this call but paves the way for the future of traffic management.”

Hardware: The Complementary Element

Coupled with VantageARGUS CV is Iteris’ BlueTOAD Spectra CV, a roadside unit uniting various wireless technologies such as Bluetooth® (2.4 GHz), Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC), and Cellular Vehicle to Everything (C-V2X) (5.9 GHz) into a single unit. The BlueTOAD Spectra CV roadside unit integrates DSRC/C-V2X with real-time and historical Bluetooth detection, delivering V2X interconnectivity to support safety and mobility applications within connected vehicle initiatives, thereby ensuring synchronization with transportation agency travel-time and performance measures-based systems, according to Iteris.

With connected vehicles steering towards mainstream deployment, Iteris strategically positions itself to lead by offering a comprehensive stack of hardware and software that can function independently or in concert. To explore more about its offerings, click here.
