Dennis Haskins, Who Played the Hapless Principal on ‘Saved by the Bell,’ Dies at 75
Dennis Haskins, the actor forever associated with Principal Richard Belding on Saved by the Bell, has died at 75, according to his agent.
The news was confirmed early Tuesday by agent Jay Schachter, who remembered Haskins not just as a client, but as a close friend of more than two decades.
“It’s a tragic loss,” Schachter said in a statement. “Everyone loved Mr. Belding, and those of us who got to know Dennis loved him even more. He was a great person, and he absolutely loved his fans. He always had time for them, no matter what. He was my client and dear friend for over 20 years, and I will miss him terribly. I’m heartbroken.”
For millions of viewers, Haskins was best known as the well-meaning but often outmatched principal of Bayside High, the fictional school at the center of NBC’s Saved by the Bell. The series aired from 1989 to 1993 and became a defining teen sitcom of its era, following a group of Southern California students whose schemes, crushes, and classroom chaos often left Belding scrambling to maintain order.
Part of the show’s enduring appeal was its playful imbalance of authority: the kids almost always seemed one step ahead, while Principal Belding served as the exasperated adult trying to keep up. That dynamic helped make Haskins one of the most recognizable faces of Saturday morning television, even as the show drew both mockery and affection for its over-the-top storylines.
Tributes quickly followed news of his death. Lark Voorhies, who played Lisa Turtle on the long-running sitcom, shared a heartfelt remembrance on Instagram, describing Haskins as a lasting presence in her life.
“Knowing Dennis Haskins for almost 40 years has been one of the truest blessings of my life, which makes losing him hurt so deeply,” she wrote. “We shared so much history together from our earliest days, and through it all, he remained a fabulous person, a loyal friend, and someone with such a kind, gentle heart.”
Long before he became a sitcom staple, Haskins built a varied career in entertainment. Born and raised in Chattanooga, Tennessee, he was active in school theater and helped start a community theater group, according to a biography from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. That early interest in performance would eventually open the door to a wide-ranging life in show business.
His pre-acting résumé was unusually eclectic. Before landing major television roles, Haskins worked as a music manager, agent, and concert promoter. According to his IMDb biography, his clients included Tom Jones and Gregg Allman, giving him a foothold in the entertainment industry well before his face became familiar to TV audiences.
In the 1980s, he also appeared in guest roles on series including The Twilight Zone and Magnum, P.I. But it was Saved by the Bell that cemented his legacy, turning him into a pop culture fixture for a generation of viewers.
