Hewlett Packard Enterprise Fuels the Launch of Canada’s Premier 5G Open RAN Network with TELUS

In an ambitious move toward enhancing Canada’s digital landscape, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) has partnered with TELUS to roll out the nation’s inaugural 5G open radio access network (Open RAN). Marking a significant leap in connectivity, this collaboration aims to bring ultra-responsive and faster mobile access across Canada, covering an impressive expanse of 3,000 sites. This cutting-edge TELUS Open RAN 5G network is set to redefine the customer experience by delivering instantaneous connectivity.

The foundation of this transformative telecom project lies in the deployment of HPE ProLiant DL110 Gen11 servers. These purpose-built servers are engineered to accommodate the hefty demands of high-performance telecommunications workloads, offering a robust, flexible, and virtualized foundation. The goal is to propel next-generation cellular connectivity to not only urban dwellers but also those in rural regions of Canada, thereby bridging the digital divide. Within the Open RAN infrastructure, these servers facilitate a crucial role by acting as the Distributed Unit (DU), preparing and refining data for seamless transmission over the emerging 5G network.

“The essence of Open RAN technology is its ability to open doors for telecom operators, offering them the freedom to design and manage their networks with preferred equipment and software,” explained Phil Cutrone, HPE’s senior vice president and general manager of Service Providers, OEM, and Telco. He further highlighted HPE’s commitment to enabling success through energy-efficient, open, and flexible solutions tailored for edge computing requirements.

The leap to 5G is set to revolutionize the global data network ecosystem, enabling real-time Internet of Things (IoT) applications, immersive virtual reality experiences, and the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into both consumer and business environments. Forecasts suggest a tripling of network traffic by 2028, highlighting the critical demand for 5G capabilities, especially in under-served remote and rural areas. These communities stand to benefit significantly, with 5G communications expected to bolster operations and spur economic growth.

“Integrating 5G with Open RAN paves the way for unparalleled flexibility and diversity in mobile communications services for Canadians,” declared Nazim Benhadid, Chief Technology Officer at TELUS. The collaboration with HPE is instrumental in building a forward-looking network infrastructure that not only meets performance benchmarks but also aligns with TELUS’s environmental goals of reducing energy intensity per data traffic by 50% come 2030.

The HPE ProLiant Gen11 servers anchor the Open RAN solution with their rugged design and compliance with Network Equipment-Building System (NEBS) standards. This setup liberates TELUS from the constraints of proprietary network solutions, allowing for smoother integration with other components of the Open RAN 5G infrastructure. Moreover, leveraging AI technologies, these servers efficiently manage power consumption by dynamically adjusting to high and low utilization periods, significantly reducing the energy footprint compared to traditional Open RAN setups.
