H₂O Heroes: Journey of a Drop – A Sensory-Friendly Water Adventure
Water becomes the gateway to science, nature and immersive discovery in H₂O Heroes: Journey of a Drop, a sensory-friendly experience taking place at Dundalk Institute of Technology during Science Week 2026. Created for families, adults and inquisitive visitors of all ages, the event transforms the water cycle into an accessible, room-by-room adventure.
This relaxed edition has been designed with neurodivergent and sensory-sensitive guests in mind. Attendance is limited to create a calmer atmosphere, while flexible participation allows everyone to move through the experience in the way that feels most comfortable.
A Passport Through the World of Water
Each visitor receives a Water Passport on arrival. Acting like a quest guide, it leads participants through a collection of interactive spaces charting water’s journey from microscopic molecules to rivers, lakes and oceans.
There is no requirement to complete activities in a particular order or within a fixed time. Guests can pause, revisit a favourite station, watch from a distance or skip any element they would rather not experience.
Hands-On Science and Freshwater Life
Experiments and practical demonstrations reveal why water behaves in such unusual and important ways. Friendly science facilitators will be available throughout the route to answer questions, explain the exhibits and support visitors without placing pressure on them to participate.
Another area explores the wildlife and habitats hidden within freshwater environments. Visitors can learn about the organisms living in rivers and lakes, why these ecosystems need protection, and how human communities remain connected through shared water resources.
An Optional Virtual Reality Experience
Visitors aged 16 and over can choose to enter an optional virtual reality experience presenting water from a new perspective. Like stepping into an educational game world, VR offers a more immersive way to engage with the subject. Participation is entirely voluntary, making it easy for guests who find headsets or simulated environments uncomfortable to opt out.
Turn Your Experience Into Art
The journey concludes with a collaborative installation developed with visual artist Michelle Boyle and expanded from creative work produced during earlier H₂O Heroes activities. The evolving artwork reflects the links between water, the natural world and local communities.
Guests can “Add Your Drop” by contributing a drawing, message or personal promise related to protecting aquatic environments. Every addition becomes part of the larger piece, showing how individual choices can combine to create meaningful change.
Designed for Comfort and Choice
Several adjustments will help make this session more welcoming for people who may find conventional exhibitions crowded or overstimulating:
- Smaller groups and fewer visitors
- Lower background noise and gentler lighting
- A quieter overall environment
- A dedicated space for breaks and recovery
- Clear visual guidance throughout the route
- Support from approachable facilitators
- Freedom to explore at an individual pace
- Optional participation in every activity, including VR
Whether guests want to experiment, observe wildlife, try virtual reality or simply enjoy the creative finale, Journey of a Drop offers multiple ways to take part. Breaks, skipped stations and quiet observation are all welcome, ensuring that curiosity—not pressure—guides the adventure.
