Millions of French press coffee makers recalled due to burn risk
Bodum USA is recalling approximately 5.9 million French press coffee makers after reports that their glass carafes can unexpectedly shatter, potentially causing serious burn injuries.
The recall affects French press models equipped with glass carafes that may break if they are cracked, damaged or weakened during use. Regulators warned that stirring coffee with metal utensils can create damage that increases the risk of breakage.
According to safety officials, the company has received 70 reports of carafes breaking. In 48 of those incidents, consumers reportedly suffered burns from hot coffee or liquid.
The affected products were sold in the United States through major retailers and online marketplaces, including Amazon, Target and Walmart. Sales took place over several decades, from 1974 through October 2026.
Models included in the recall
The recall covers multiple Bodum French press lines, including:
- 8-cup French press models
- 12-cup Bistro models
- Brazil
- Caffettiera
- Chambord
- Crema
- Java
- Jesper
- Kenya
Consumers who own one of these products should examine the glass carafe for cracks, chips or other visible damage. A damaged carafe should not be used, particularly with hot liquids.
How to reduce the risk
Users are advised not to stir coffee with metal spoons or other metal utensils. A plastic stirring spoon should be used instead. The company has indicated that replacement plastic spoons are available for affected customers.
The recall does not currently include a refund program. Owners should stop using any carafe that appears damaged and review the official recall guidance before continuing to use an affected French press.
