Gamecity Hamburg awards up to €80,000 to five games in latest Prototype Funding Round

Hamburg’s games scene just received a major boost: five digital game projects have been selected for Prototype Funding, each eligible for non-repayable support of up to €80,000. The initiative is designed to help local studios and solo developers transform ambitious concepts into playable prototypes with a clear path to market.

Fuel for early-stage development

The Prototype Funding program aims to reduce early production risk and sharpen projects for publishers, investors, and players. The grants can be applied to core prototype work—such as production, art, code, and audio—helping teams build a strong vertical slice that communicates vision, scope, and commercial potential. This round specifically targets Hamburg-based creators and studios, continuing the city’s push to grow its developer ecosystem.

How the five projects were chosen

A dedicated awarding committee evaluated submissions on creative strength, feasibility, and market readiness. According to the organizers, the latest call drew a notably strong field, making the final selection particularly competitive. The committee emphasized that the quality bar continues to rise and confirmed plans to offer a second funding round in the fall, with more details to follow.

Next chance to apply

Developers aiming to join the next cohort can mark their calendars: applications for the upcoming Prototype Funding round open in September 2026. Teams are encouraged to prepare focused pitches that clearly present gameplay, production timelines, budgets, and a realistic route to market.

Incubation track: Games Lift

Alongside prototype funding, the city runs the Games Lift Incubator, which supports five teams per cohort with €15,000 in funding, mentorship, coaching, workshops, and tailored guidance. Applications for the current intake are open until June 1, 2026. Alumni of the incubator include Pipapo Games, Chasmic Drop, and Bird Outside, highlighting how the program can help studios sharpen their concepts and development plans before they scale.

Why this matters for Hamburg’s developers

Early-stage backing remains one of the toughest hurdles for indie and emerging studios. By combining direct grants with structured mentorship, Hamburg’s approach gives teams the breathing room to prototype, test, and iterate faster—while also preparing them for conversations with partners once a prototype lands. For the five projects funded this round, that means a clearer runway to a compelling playable build and a stronger shot at securing the next stage of support.
