ABS and HD Hyundai Mipo Sign Agreement to Accelerate DM-Based Production Automation in Future Shipyards

A groundbreaking agreement has been forged between ABS and HD Hyundai Mipo (HMD), signaling a significant move towards the advancement of digital manufacturing in shipyard operations. This joint development project (JDP) aims to integrate smart technology within HMD’s shipyard framework, enhancing operations through modern advancements such as artificial intelligence, communication technologies, automation, and robotics.

At the heart of this collaboration is the utilization of ABS’s Guide for Smart Technologies for Shipyards. By leveraging these guidelines, HMD will seek out opportunities for process optimization with a focus on cutting-edge features like hyper-connectivity, advanced automation, and data-driven intelligence.

Christopher J. Wiernicki, ABS Chairman and CEO, noted the transformative impact of these technical innovations. “The landscape of shipyard production is being revolutionized by cutting-edge technologies, constantly pushing the limits and opening up unprecedented possibilities. Features that enhance health, safety, and quality are redefining efficiency and innovation in modern shipbuilding. The integration of augmented and virtual reality, advanced 3D engineering, AI-driven simulation, digital twins, and robotics are vital to the evolution of smart ships and shipbuilding,” he explained.

The vision behind this joint development project is ambitious, as highlighted by Hyung Kwang Kim, HMD President and CEO. “Our aim with this digital manufacturing initiative, led by Mipo, is to gain objective evaluations from certification authorities and establish it as a global benchmark. Furthermore, this could serve as a catalyst for shipowners and classification societies, ultimately enhancing efficiency in construction processes,” he commented.

This initiative not only explores the potential for obtaining additional certifications from ABS, such as Product Design Assessment or Manufacturing Assessment, but it also promises to streamline procedures in shipyard operations and surveys, providing benefits for both ABS and HMD.

ABS continues to lead the way with pioneering research and insights intended to support technological advancements within the marine and offshore sectors. Through this collaboration, they further cement their role as a facilitator of innovation and efficiency in shipbuilding through the integration of smart technologies.
