Fever’s Sophie Cunningham reveals drastic personal measure taken after 2026 WNBA season

Sophie Cunningham is entering the WNBA offseason with both her future in Indiana and her personal security situation under discussion.

The Indiana Fever guard is set to become a free agent, leaving open the possibility that she may not return for a third season alongside Caitlin Clark. Cunningham became a prominent figure during her time in Indianapolis, known not only for her role on the court but also for the physical, outspoken style that earned her a reputation as one of the team’s most protective players.

However, the attention surrounding Cunningham reached a new level during the 2026 campaign. Following controversial comments about transgender participation in women’s sports, she said her public profile had grown to the point where she no longer felt comfortable moving around without additional protection.

During a discussion on her podcast, Cunningham revealed that she had hired security personnel to accompany her around the clock.

She explained that recognition had once been limited to certain locations. That has since changed, with fans and critics identifying her in cities and states across the country. According to Cunningham, the decision was made primarily for safety and to help her preserve her personal well-being while dealing with the increased attention.

The player also described wanting to protect her energy and present a more positive version of herself in public. Her remarks came after an earlier television interview in which she argued that girls and women should not be required to compete or share locker rooms with transgender athletes.

Those comments sparked a wider debate, adding to the scrutiny Cunningham faced throughout the season. Her situation also unfolded amid several high-profile incidents involving figures connected to the broader discussion around gender eligibility in sports, including attempts by former NBA players to enter the WNBA draft and the removal of two Cunningham supporters from a Seattle Storm game.

Whether Cunningham remains with the Fever is still unknown. Her popularity with Indiana supporters, physical presence and connection with Clark could make her an attractive option for the franchise, but the offseason will determine whether both sides are prepared to continue together.

For now, Cunningham appears focused on managing the consequences of a turbulent season and maintaining a greater sense of security as her visibility continues to rise.
