This AI Platform Can Take The Heat. Literally.

Heat waves pose threats beyond human discomfort: they endanger valuable shipments as well. While many people picture the cold chain as a concern mainly for medicines, seafood, and produce, high temperatures can compromise leather goods, cosmetics, and other items as soon as a shipment leaves a climate-controlled facility and travels through sun-soaked routes. A single malfunctioning cooling unit on a trailer in the desert can push interior conditions past safe levels, and the journey’s multiple hand-offs can muddy accountability.

Enter a new kind of monitoring: a compact, battery-free platform built around ultra-small sensors known as Pixels. These units are so tiny—roughly the size of a postage stamp—that they can tag individual products, whether they’re sitting on shelves or moving through a warehouse and across highways. Each Pixel watches the environment and reports essential data, especially temperature, giving managers a precise view of where things went off track.

Extreme heat isn’t a fringe risk—it’s a growing reality driven by climate trends. When conditions spike, the consequences extend beyond spoiled goods to reduced worker efficiency, safety concerns, and financial losses tied to damaged inventory. The idea of what “belongs in the cold chain” is expanding: dry goods and other long‑term stored items can also suffer from heat exposure, especially with prolonged exposure and repeated handoffs along the supply route.

The Pixel platform operates with a high-temperature threshold, allowing monitoring up to 185 degrees Fahrenheit. Data travels via Bluetooth, and notably, the sensors don’t require onboard batteries. Instead, they harvest energy from ambient radio frequency signals, enabling continuous, maintenance‑free operation in transit and on-site environments.

Each Pixel costs about ten cents, a price point that has helped accelerate broad adoption in large deployments. The first major rollout came with a leading retailer, and the technology has progressed through multiple generations. Future iterations are expected to bring prices down further, potentially to around five cents per unit.

The overarching goal is straightforward: deliver uninterrupted visibility and reassurance about the whereabouts and condition of items at all times, so teams can pinpoint exactly when and where any deviation occurred and respond swiftly.
