AI curriculum to be introduced in Punjab govt schools soon, says Harjot Bains – The Tribune

Punjab is preparing to roll out an Artificial Intelligence (AI) curriculum across government schools, Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains said during a visit to Barnala on Friday. Framing the move as a push toward practical, future-ready learning, Bains noted that the state aims to sharpen its competitive edge in education and equip students with skills aligned with the global job market.

What’s planned

Bains emphasized that the state’s education strategy is shifting from theory-heavy instruction to more hands-on, applied learning. The forthcoming AI curriculum is intended to help students build foundational understanding of emerging technologies and develop problem-solving abilities that match industry expectations. While timelines were not detailed, Bains positioned the initiative as a near-term priority designed to prepare learners for modern careers shaped by automation, data, and intelligent systems.

AI universities on the horizon

The school-level push will be complemented at the higher-education level. On June 23, AAP’s Punjab affairs in-charge and former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said in Muktsar that the state would set up four AI-focused universities. Together, these steps suggest a pipeline approach—from foundational exposure in schools to advanced study—aimed at building a robust AI talent ecosystem within Punjab.

Bright Minds Punjab 2026: student engagement and recognition

Speaking at the Bright Minds Punjab 2026 programme, Bains interacted with students and underscored the importance of aligning classroom learning with real-world applications. The event also celebrated academic excellence: government school students who scored above 90% in the Class XII examinations were felicitated for their achievements, highlighting the state’s emphasis on merit and aspiration.

Boost to higher education in Dhanaula

In a related development, Bains announced that a new government college will be established in Dhanaula to strengthen access to higher education in the region. He credited Sangrur MP Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer—also present at the event—for sustained efforts to bring the institution to the area. The move is intended to expand local opportunities for advanced study and reduce barriers for students who might otherwise need to travel farther for college-level programs.

Why this matters

AI literacy is increasingly becoming a core component of modern education, touching fields from healthcare and agriculture to manufacturing and public services. By introducing AI at the school level, Punjab seeks to:

  • Familiarize students early with concepts such as data, algorithms, and responsible technology use.
  • Encourage practical, project-based learning that develops critical thinking and problem-solving.
  • Create a clearer pathway from K-12 exposure to specialized study and careers in AI and related domains.

Success will hinge on thoughtful curriculum design, teacher training, and equitable access to resources and digital infrastructure. If executed well, the initiative could position Punjab as a leader in integrating AI education across school and university stages, while giving students a head start in an increasingly tech-driven economy.

Government’s broader education agenda

Reiterating the state’s priorities, Sisodia said that comprehensive education reforms and preparing students for future challenges are among the government’s foremost responsibilities. The combined focus on AI in schools, new AI universities, and expanded higher-education options in places like Dhanaula signals a long-term plan to align Punjab’s education system with evolving workforce demands.
