Investors increasingly nervous over AI bubble

Investor anxiety around the artificial intelligence boom is starting to look a lot more serious. What was recently treated as an unstoppable growth story is now being questioned by bond markets, institutional shareholders, and risk-hedging desks, as the cost of building the AI future keeps climbing.

At the center of the concern is spending. Major technology companies including Alphabet, Meta, and Oracle have either tapped bond markets or are reportedly preparing to do so, raising fresh debt as they fund massive AI infrastructure plans. That comes at an awkward moment: interest rates remain elevated, making it more expensive to finance the data centers, chips, and power capacity needed to stay competitive in AI.

For investors, the issue is no longer whether AI will transform the economy. It is whether the companies racing to dominate it can justify the scale of spending now being demanded. The numbers have become so large that even bullish backers are beginning to ask when these investments will produce reliable returns.

That skepticism is spreading beyond public markets. According to The Wall Street Journal, institutional investors have pushed Anthropic to lower its IPO valuation expectations. The pressure reflects broader unease with private AI pricing, especially as the company is said to expect nearly $900 billion in AI infrastructure spending over the coming years. Even in a sector known for ambitious forecasts, that figure has intensified debate over whether the current cycle is driven by durable economics or by fear of missing out.

At the same time, worries about a reversal are showing up in the market for protection trades. Demand has increased for options and credit-default swaps tied to the AI theme, instruments typically used by investors looking to hedge against sharp declines or credit stress. In other words, while many market participants still want exposure to AI upside, a growing number also want insurance in case the boom starts to crack.

That contrast captures the current mood perfectly: enthusiasm has not disappeared, but confidence is no longer unquestioned. AI remains the dominant trade on Wall Street, yet it is increasingly being treated as a crowded and fragile one.

The warning from Pacific Investment Management Co. adds to that tension. PIMCO’s chief executive said a downturn is inevitable at some stage and that “things are going to break.” Coming from one of the world’s largest bond investors, the comment carries weight because it points directly to the financial plumbing behind the AI expansion. If growth slows, financing costs rise further, or revenue falls short of expectations, the stress may not stay confined to equity valuations. It could spill into debt markets and pressure the balance sheets of companies that borrowed heavily to build out AI capacity.

For now, none of this means the AI rally is over. The sector still has enormous momentum, and the largest players continue to spend aggressively because they believe the winners will control foundational technology for years. But the market is clearly entering a more skeptical phase, one where investors are asking harder questions about leverage, valuation, and the time it will take for AI profits to catch up with AI promises.

That shift matters. Bubbles rarely look dangerous when optimism is universal. They become vulnerable when believers start buying downside protection at the same time they cheer the upside. In the AI trade, that moment may already have arrived.
