Journalist Accuses Ohio Newspaper of Putting Her Name on AI “Express Desk” Story Without Permission

A reporter at Cleveland.com, the digital home of The Plain Dealer, says the outlet published an AI-assisted article under her byline even though she neither wrote nor reviewed it — and says it happened while she was away on her honeymoon.

Kaitlin Durbin, a government reporter for the Ohio news organization, raised the issue publicly in a post on X on September 7. According to Durbin, a short local news article about the resignation of the law director in Cuyahoga County appeared with her name attached, despite having no connection to her reporting.

In her post, Durbin said she was “trying to understand” how the story ran under her byline while she was out of the country. She added that she “did not write or review a word of it” and said the piece did not appear to draw from any of her previous work. She ended the post with a pointed question: “Does Cleveland.com think they just own my name now?”

The disputed article was produced by the site’s “Cleveland.com Express Desk,” a content operation the publisher has described as using AI tools to help generate stories that are then reviewed and edited by staff members.

After the controversy surfaced, the article was updated. Durbin’s name was removed, and the site appended a correction note stating: “This story has been updated to correct the byline. A reporter’s byline was added to the story in error.”

At the time of the incident, it remained unclear how her name was attached to the piece, who reviewed it before publication, or whose reporting — if any — formed the basis of the item. The story now reportedly appears without any byline at all.

AI in the newsroom was already a flashpoint

The byline dispute lands in the middle of a broader debate over Cleveland.com’s use of artificial intelligence in journalism. Earlier this year, the outlet drew attention when editor Chris Quinn published a letter to readers defending the creation of an AI-powered news desk.

In that letter, Quinn argued that artificial intelligence is not a threat to journalism but an inevitable part of its future. He framed the technology as a productivity tool that could speed up routine news work and give staff reporters more time to focus on original reporting.

Quinn also criticized journalism schools and aspiring reporters for being too hesitant about adopting AI tools, taking a notably aggressive position compared with many other newsroom leaders who have approached the technology more cautiously.

That rollout was also accompanied by assurances from newsroom leadership that AI would not replace human accountability. Leila Atassi, editor of public interest and advocacy at Cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer, told the Columbia Journalism Review earlier this year that stories produced through the AI desk would still be the work of an actual journalist.

Her message was clear: AI might assist, but it was not supposed to function as the journalist itself.

Why this incident matters

That is exactly why Durbin’s accusation is so significant. In journalism, a byline is more than a name on a page — it is a marker of authorship, accountability, and professional credibility. Attaching a reporter’s name to content they did not produce or approve cuts directly against long-standing newsroom ethics.

The use of AI in media has already raised concerns about accuracy, sourcing, plagiarism, and transparency. But incidents involving bylines strike at a particularly sensitive nerve because they blur responsibility. If a story is wrong, misleading, or incomplete, readers naturally assume the named reporter stands behind it.

For working journalists, that can create reputational risk. A byline can affect trust with readers, relationships with sources, and even future employment. When AI-assisted systems enter the publishing chain, the rules around review and attribution become even more important.

This case also highlights a practical problem many newsrooms are only beginning to confront: if AI is being used to accelerate publication, what safeguards exist to prevent human identities from being misapplied in the process?

A growing industry concern

Durbin’s complaint is unlikely to be the last conflict of its kind. Across the media industry, publishers are experimenting with AI for summaries, alerts, SEO-driven briefs, and other low-lift content categories. The promise is efficiency. The risk is that editorial standards can erode faster than policies are built to protect them.

News organizations often present AI as a back-end assistant, but readers rarely see the internal workflow. They only see the final product — the story, the byline, and the implied trust that comes with both.

When that trust breaks down, even in a single article, it can undermine broader claims that AI is being deployed responsibly.

For now, Cleveland.com has corrected the byline and removed Durbin’s name. But the episode raises larger questions that won’t disappear with a single editor’s note: Who is accountable for AI-assisted journalism, how transparent should outlets be about the role automation plays, and what protections do reporters have when their names become part of those systems?

As publishers race to integrate generative AI into newsroom operations, this incident stands as a sharp reminder that speed and scale are not substitutes for consent, oversight, or editorial integrity.
