1.3 million Android activations per day: Google Chairman
Momentum for Android continues to surge as new figures show a sustained push in daily activations. A high-ranking Google executive shared the latest milestone during a technology briefing held in New York, alongside data on tablet activations and the overall installed base.
According to the briefing, activations are running at roughly 1.3 million every day, with tablet devices contributing around 70 thousand of those activations. The total number of Android-powered devices in use worldwide is approaching 480 million.
For context, earlier in the year analysts noted a spike to about 900,000 activations each day, an equivalent of roughly ten devices per second. By mid-2011, the daily figure hovered near the half‑million mark before continuing its climb. While the platform’s growth has been rapid, the uptake of the latest major OS revision has been uneven. Many devices either lag behind in receiving the update or are not compatible, delaying broad adoption compared with earlier milestones.
Security researchers warning about the mobile space have highlighted ongoing threats targeting Android, along with other platforms. The latest quarterly assessments point to a steady stream of mobile-focused malware, including programs that siphon messages, create botnets, spy on users, or deploy destructive payloads. The rapid expansion of Android as a target underscores the need for robust defenses and timely updates across devices and vendors.
