Charlton’s miserable run continues as Sam Dalby fires Bolton to away win

Charlton Athletic’s difficult spell deepened on home soil as Sam Dalby’s first-half strike gave Bolton Wanderers a 1-0 victory at The Valley.

The defeat leaves Charlton without a win in 11 matches. A fourth consecutive Championship loss has also dragged Nathan Jones’ side down to 21st in the table, increasing the pressure on the manager.

Bolton began brightly, with captain Josh Sheehan testing the hosts’ defence inside the opening minutes. Charlton created their best early opportunity when Tyreece Campbell delivered a dangerous cross towards the far post, where Danny McNamara was unable to turn the ball past goalkeeper Jack Bonham.

Charlie Kelman then found the net for Charlton, but the effort was ruled out for offside.

Bolton took control in the 18th minute after a misplaced pass from Nathaniel Chalobah presented Dalby with a clear route towards goal. The striker kept his composure, advancing into the area before calmly placing his finish beyond Will Mannion.

Charlton struggled to respond and rarely threatened Bonham before the interval. Kelman’s tame attempt was comfortably collected, while Harvey Knibbs headed wide from Karlan Grant’s cross.

Bolton came close to doubling their advantage when Max Conway’s effort appeared destined for goal, only for Charlton captain Lloyd Jones to make an important block after McNamara had surrendered possession inside the penalty area.

The frustration around The Valley was clear at half-time, with sections of the home crowd booing the players off the pitch. Charlton’s passing had lacked urgency, while confidence appeared to drain from the team as the opening period progressed.

Charlton increase pressure after the break

Bolton continued to look dangerous after the restart. Atsuki Ito fired a first-time volley wide shortly after the interval, although Charlton gradually began to apply more pressure.

Campbell supplied a promising delivery from the left on the hour mark, but Kelman could only direct his header towards Bonham. The forward was immediately replaced by experienced substitute Matty Godden.

Charlton were handed another opening when Bonham was penalised for handling a backpass from Sheehan. Grant took the resulting free-kick quickly, but Bolton reacted sharply to block Knibbs’ effort from close range.

The hosts pushed forward in search of an equaliser, yet Bolton’s defensive organisation remained impressive. Akin Famewo was particularly influential, making several important interventions and almost connecting with a free-kick from Gaizka Larrazabal at the other end.

Bolton substitute Thierry Gale had two chances to settle the contest during the closing stages, but Mannion kept Charlton within reach. Campbell also came close with a curling effort from distance that drifted wide.

Despite Charlton’s late pressure, Bolton held on to secure a valuable away victory. The result extends their unbeaten run on the road to four matches and leaves the Addicks facing an increasingly urgent fight to recover their form.
