Sheff Wed sign midfielder Onyango
Sheffield Wednesday have completed the signing of midfielder Tyler Onyango on a three-year contract, adding a young but experienced option to their squad ahead of the new campaign.
The 23-year-old joins the Owls as a free agent after leaving Everton at the end of last season, bringing with him a background shaped by Premier League development and several loan spells in the lower leagues.
Although Onyango did not establish himself as a regular first-team figure at Everton, he built up valuable experience during temporary moves away from Goodison Park. Over the past three seasons, he spent time in League One with Burton Albion, Forest Green Rovers and Stockport County, gaining exposure to the physical demands and intensity of senior football.
That route has helped define him as a player with both technical grounding and practical experience in competitive environments, something Sheffield Wednesday will hope can translate into midfield depth and long-term potential.
Speaking after the move, Onyango said he sees clear momentum at Hillsborough and is eager to be part of what comes next.
“This is a club moving in the right direction and that’s something any player would be excited to be part of,” he told the club website.
For Wednesday, the deal represents a low-risk signing with possible upside. Bringing in a 23-year-old on a free transfer gives the club room to develop a player who has already spent time in multiple senior setups, while still having age on his side.
From a squad-building perspective, the transfer also reflects a common modern recruitment strategy: targeting players released by top-flight clubs who may be ready to kick on with consistent minutes elsewhere. In Onyango’s case, Sheffield Wednesday appear to be betting that his academy pedigree and loan experience can now be converted into a more settled role.
The length of the contract suggests the club sees this as more than a short-term addition. A three-year deal offers stability for both player and team, giving Onyango the chance to establish himself while allowing Wednesday to plan with a longer horizon in midfield.
