TCS Releases AI-Powered Solution ‘MasterCraft’ For Modernising Legacy Enterprise Systems

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has introduced the latest iteration of its innovative MasterCraft solution. This version comes enhanced with cutting-edge generative artificial intelligence and agentic AI capabilities, offering a robust approach to tackling the challenges posed by legacy enterprise systems.

In today’s digital age, enterprises embarking on transformative journeys face a myriad of challenges. These range from the overwhelming presence of cumbersome legacy applications and data to the escalating catastrophe of technological debt. Additionally, there’s the burden of high maintenance costs, a scarcity of subject matter experts, and often, inadequate documentation.

While numerous modernisation solutions exist, most are predominantly focused on legacy conversions, leading to costly and intricate program deliveries. Recognising these hurdles, Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. has rolled out its new AI-enhanced version of MasterCraft. This solution automates the modernisation of legacy applications, significantly slashing the costs and time typically associated with manual conversions.

Interestingly, converting an obsolete application to a contemporary technology often risks creating yet another soon-to-be outdated system. This can result in applications that are challenging to maintain. MasterCraft, powered by generative AI and agentic AI, mitigates the risk of obsolescence, ensuring that systems remain sustainable and maintainable.

A compelling success story comes from one of North America’s largest banking institutions, which employed MasterCraft to revolutionise its mainframe applications. The bank reported a remarkable 2X increase in productivity savings during the modernisation and achieved delivery speeds that were three times faster than traditional methods. Additionally, they established a central knowledge repository, saving 90% of the effort usually required.

Ashvini Saxena, the head of TCS Components Engineering Group and Digital Software and Solutions, commented, “Enterprises have large applications in multiple technologies and architectures over decades. Currently available solutions often make it financially burdensome to execute such modernisation programs.”

Saxena further elaborated, “We have harnessed generative AI and agentic AI capabilities for the extraction and conversion of business knowledge. This augmentation empowers the delivery of maintainable applications and data supported by a dynamic design repository.”

The agentic AI brings together TCS’ vast knowledge base, industry best practices, and specialised agents to address the unique challenges inherent in various complex modernisation initiatives. Importantly, it allows human decision-making to remain integral throughout the process.

Zachariah Chirayil, practice director at the market research firm Everest Group, noted, “As businesses undergo digital transformation, enterprises are reassessing their heritage environments. They are prioritising integration with cloud platforms and the modernisation of legacy applications. TCS MasterCraft is pivotal in supporting enterprises with the modernisation of mainframe applications, facilitating the transition from monolithic architectures to microservices, and optimising mainframe workloads.”

In conclusion, TCS’s MasterCraft represents a significant leap forward for enterprises aiming to modernise their legacy systems. By integrating advanced AI technologies, it streamlines the modernisation process, reduces associated costs, and ensures that businesses can sustainably manage their applications in an ever-evolving digital landscape.
