WaveX unveils ‘Kalaa Setu’ to tap AI startups for multilingual citizen outreach
In a landmark move aimed at leveraging the transformative potential of artificial intelligence for inclusive communication, the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting in India has announced the launch of the Kalaa Setu – Real-Time Language Tech for Bharat Challenge. This initiative, spearheaded through its WaveX Startup Accelerator Platform, marks a critical step toward enhancing multilingual outreach across the nation.
The Ministry’s release reveals that this nationwide challenge calls upon India’s leading AI startups to conceptualize and develop innovative, scalable solutions. The goal is to automate the generation of audio, video, and graphic content from text inputs, all while supporting a multitude of Indian languages, effectively democratizing access to information and ensuring no linguistic community is left behind.
The Kalaa Setu Challenge is centered on three fundamental pillars of AI-driven content generation:
1. Text-to-Video Generation
This component focuses on the automated transformation of textual content into engaging video formats. By allowing customization of the environment, tone, and subject matter, this solution caters to diverse communication needs, ensuring content resonance with varied audience segments.
2. Text-to-Graphics Generation
Through this feature, data-driven infographics and illustrative visuals are crafted to simplify complex information. These visuals not only enhance comprehensibility but also increase engagement by presenting information in an aesthetically appealing manner.
3. Text-to-Audio Generation
This part of the challenge employs advanced voice synthesis technologies to generate speech outputs that are not just precise but also emotionally nuanced. With sensitivity to regional accents, this technology aims to enhance the relatability and impact of audio content across different linguistic demographics.
Kalaa Setu aspires to bridge the digital language divide by enabling public communication entities to convert important information into formats that resonate locally and linguistically. By transforming official information into infographic visuals, personalized video explainers, and audio news capsules, the initiative aims to communicate effectively and in real-time.
Whether catering to a farmer requiring weather updates, a student seeking exam notifications, or a senior citizen in need of healthcare scheme information, the Kalaa Setu initiative is poised to deliver content that is both contextually and linguistically relevant.
Interested startups are encouraged to register and apply for the challenge through the WaveX portal at https://wavex.wavesbazaar.com, under the Kalaa Setu challenge category. Participants are required to submit a working Minimum Viable Concept (MVC) by July 30th, 2025, with a video demonstration of their product. Finalists will present their cutting-edge solutions before a national jury in New Delhi. The winner stands to gain a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for full-scale development, pilot support collaborations with AIR, DD, and PIB, along with incubation opportunities under the WAVEX Innovation Platform.
For more information on technical requirements and other relevant details for the challenges, startups and interested parties can access the resources available on the WaveX portal.
This strategic initiative by the Ministry underscores the growing recognition of AI’s potential to transform communication within a linguistically diverse nation like India. As this technological endeavor unfolds, it holds the promise of greater inclusivity and accessibility in the dissemination of vital information across the country.
